An explosion at a hydroelectric power plant in northern Italy has resulted in four fatalities and multiple individuals reported missing. The incident occurred underwater at the Lake Suviana plant, situated approximately 70km (43 miles) away from Bologna. The affected area lies approximately 30m (100ft) beneath the lake's surface.
According to the mayor of Camugnano, near the site, the explosion likely ignited during maintenance work, leading to a fire. Marco Masinara described the situation as "serious," with rescuers facing difficulties accessing the affected area.
The victims, three of whom were aged between 35 and 73, perished as a result of the blast. Bologna's prefect, Attilio Visconti, stated that the explosion originated from a turbine on the eighth floor below the surface, causing flooding in the lower levels.
Despite efforts by rescue divers, three individuals remained trapped beyond reach. Several others suffered severe burns and were transported to nearby hospitals by helicopter, with two admitted to intensive care.
Mayor Matteo Lepore of Bologna characterized the underground search conditions as "extremely challenging," deeming it one of Italy's worst workplace tragedies in recent memory.
An investigation will commence once the site is secured, according to the city's chief prosecutor, Giuseppe Amato, emphasizing the determination to locate the missing individuals.
The accident is expected to amplify concerns about workplace safety, potentially triggering a nationwide strike planned by two major unions. Regional authorities, led by fire chief Francesco Notaro, are working to stabilize the facility.
Lake Suviana, an artificial reservoir created in 1932 by a dam, is nestled in the Appennine mountain range near Bologna. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed gratitude to the rescue teams via social media, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The power plant is under the ownership of Italian energy conglomerate Enel Green Power
